Ashwagandharishta (Aswagandharishtam) is Ashwagandha based ayurvedic liquid preparation used in a variety of aliment and general debility. It is also a health tonic, which helps restoring strength after a long-standing disease and improves overall health.

Generally, Ashwagandharishta is beneficial in all Vata predominance diseases, according to ayurvedic science. It also a good remedy for men’s health problems including infertility and impotency. It helps people suffering with depression, mental disorders, dementia, etc.

Ashwagandharishta has the following health benefits and medicinal uses.

Physical weakness

Ashwagandharishta provides strength to body and it is helpful in treating physical weakness. The withanolides present in the Ashwagandha are responsible for this action. It brings strength in the body and acts as antioxidant as well as adaptogenic.

Fatigue

Ayurvedic doctors frequently use Ashwagandharishta in fatigue. It gives relief and provides vitality. It reduces tiredness and fatigue by increasing the ability of the body to handle the physical as well as mental stress.

Adrenal Fatigue

Ashwagandharishta supports the adrenal gland and improves its functions. The too stressful life is underlying cause of adrenal fatigue and adrenal gland becomes unable to produce enough amount of cortisol stress hormone to cope with the stress.

Ashwagandha, the main ingredient of Ashwagandharishta, has ability to improve the functions of adrenal gland and to reduce physical, mental and emotional stress. Ultimately, it reduces stress and improves adrenal functions. Ashwagandharishta helps in following symptoms.

Some people suffering with anxiety have symptoms such as feeling uneasiness, trouble sleeping, cold hands or feet, restlessness and tingling sensation in hands or feet. In all these symptoms, Ashwagandharishta works well. According to ayurveda, all these symptoms occur due to VATA and PITTA imbalance in the body. Ashwagandharishta works on VATA type anxiety with above symptoms. In PITTA type anxiety, people have palpitation, burning or heat sensation in hands or feet and restlessness. In such condition, Brahmi (bacopa monnieri), licorice, shankhpushpi, mukta pishti (pearl calcium) and praval pishti (coral calcium) should be taken with Ashwagandharishta.

Depression

Ashwagandharishta has antidepressant properties. It relaxes the mind and increases the serotonin level in the brain. Thus, it improves interest in daily activities, corrects sleeping patterns, reduces irritability and increases energy level.

Sleeplessness or insomnia

The calming action of Ashwagandharishta helps people with insomnia. It relaxes the mind and reduces mental fatigue. The common cause of insomnia is excessive thinking during the night or some disturbed thoughts floating in the mind. In such condition, Ashwagandharishta cannot work alone. In this case, patient require following combination.

According to ayurveda, uterine weakness is the main cause of recurrent miscarriage and infertility of unknown origin. Ashwagandharishta improves uterine health and strengthens uterine muscles. Thus, it prevents miscarriages and improves fertility. However, Ashwagandha powder with cow’s milk has better results than Ashwagandharishta in the treatment of recurrent miscarriages and infertility. Aswagandharishtam is given when patient also has loss of appetite and feel difficulty to digest the Ashwagandha with milk.

    I used to take Ashwagandharishta for almost two months and I could see some benefits like my laziness disappeared, became active all the time, felt energetic and ready for any task etc. But I had to stop taking Ashwagandharishta as I was suffering from Stomach problem like gas, heartburn, sore throat etc and it made the situation worse.

    Could you possibly suggest me some alternative of Ashwagandharishta, which has same benefits and can be taken by people who have stomach problems like me?

    1. Ashwagandha Churna (Powder) alone can help. Other formulations of Ashwagandha including Ashwagandhadi Churna can also provide similar benefits and safe for patients with gastric irritation.

  6. Is it due to the alcohol content that it is not recommended during pregnancy? Can it be used in the preconception stage if you are suffering from adrenal fatigue (and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) and if so until when? What would be the suggested treatment? Thank you.

    1. Some people may feel gastric discomfort with Ashwagandharishta. It can worsen in pregnant women due to pressure in the abdominal cavity.

      However, it can be taken in the preconception stage until conception. Ashwagandha powder alone is also be beneficial in adrenal fatigue.

    1. 1. Ashwagandharishta can help to reduce weakness and it is useful for impotence. However, its effects may vary in old age when used for impotency, but it surely provides strength.

      2. Ashwagandharishta is not indicated in diabetes mellitus because it contains sugar. If you are using it for other diseases, then your blood sugar level must be under good control.

    I suffer from debilitating depersonalization with comorbid depression and insomnia, i have intense apathy and repressed anger. The symptoms from depersonalization alone are enough to drive anyone mad they include: memory loss (memory is actually fine but it is disconnected for lack of better words, from consciousness, like disorganized), emotions suppresion (but negative emotions are more present), anxiety anedonia, lack of willpower, absence of self esteem, inability to socialize, lack of empathy, little to no sense of identity.
