Ayurvedic Medicine to Quit Smoking, Tobacco or Nicotine

This is a short article as per reader’s request on ayurvedic medicine to quit cigarette smoking, chewing tobacco and other nicotine containing products.

Nicotine in the cigarette, tobacco and other similar products cause addiction. After every ½ to 4 hours, your body demands another cigarette as soon as nicotine level drops in the body. When you try to withdraw it, it causes restlessness, craving, and irritability. Many people experience nausea, intestinal cramping, headache, tingling in the hands and feet, sleeplessness, coughing, sore throat, anxiety, depression, and sweating.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Nicotine Withdrawal

According to ayurvedic science, when you try to withdraw nicotine, Vata and Pitta Dosha start increasing in the body and you experience several symptoms as explained above. Therefore, treatment should be based on Vata and Pitta Dosha aggravation. Here are some ayurvedic combinations, which help in nicotine withdrawal by enhancing mood, reducing irritability, producing a sense of well-being, and preventing depression, restlessness, headache, tingling, and sleeplessness.

Herbal Mixture for nicotine withdrawal

Ashwagandha Powder100 grams
Licorice Powder (Mulethi Churna)100 grams
Shankhpushpi Powder100 grams
Jatamansi Powder100 grams
Gotu Kola (Mandukaparni) Powder50 grams
Vacha (Sweet Flag) Powder25 grams
Amalaki (Amla) Powder25 grams
Mukta Pishti10 grams
Preparation: Procure all these herbs in fine powdered form from ayurvedic or herbal stores. Mix them in a given quantity.
Dosage: 1 teaspoon three times a day with milk.
Note: In some cases, the dosage of this mixture can be repeated up to 6 times a day for the first three days.

How to Use this mixture

How many times it should be taken depends on several factors. The simple fact is if you feel intolerable restlessness, craving or other symptoms, then you can repeat it, but it should not be repeated more than 6 times per day for first three days.

In another way, you can take it in a dosage of a half teaspoon and repeat it 12 times per day for the first three days if you are smoking every 30 minutes to 2 hours.

After 3 days, continue this herbal powder for another 7 days in a dosage of a ½ teaspoon three times a day with milk.

After 10 days, continue this powder in a dosage of a ½ teaspoon twice daily with milk for another 30 days.

Benefits of this mixture

This mixture prevents all complications occur during first three days after quitting smoking or tobacco products. It eases the mind and body and prevents craving and restlessness. It also induces sound sleep and reducing other nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Other Supporting Ayurvedic Medicines

Headache

Sutshekhar Ras: If you suffer from a headache, then you also need Sutshekhar Ras in a dosage of 250 mg three times a day.

Nausea or Vomiting

Sutshekhar Ras: If you suffer from nausea or vomiting, then you also need Sutshekhar Ras in a dosage of 250 mg three times a day.

Intestinal Cramping or Abdominal Pain

Sutshekhar Ras250 mg three times a day
Praval Pishti500 mg three times a day

If you experience intestinal cramps or abdominal pain, then Sutshekhar Ras and Praval Pishti helps to alleviate it.

Coughing

Generally, Sitopaladi Churna in a dosage of 2 grams 3 times a day will be very helpful.

Sore Throat

In a sore throat, the following combination should be taken.

Sitopaladi Churna2 grams
Gandhak Rasayana500 mg
Yashad Bhasma125 mg
Praval Pishti250 mg

The mixture should be taken 3 times daily for a sore throat.

Dry Mouth

If you feel excessive dry mouth, Pana Pishti 125 mg or Kurs Zamrud 1 tablet – 3 times a day will be helpful.

Constipation

In constipation, you can take 10 to 20 grams Psyllium Husk or Isabgol at night with a plenty of water.
