Ayurvedic Treatment for Hydrocele

Ayurveda gives awesome results in some chronic cases. It may not actually effective in every disease. Every system has some limitations. Many claims were already made on effective ayurvedic treatment of hydrocele through ayurvedic medicines, which actually appears doubtful. Before we discuss about the treatment, we should know about hydrocele facts.

Facts about Hydrocele

Fluid filled sac around the testicles that results in swelling in the scrotum is called Hydrocele.

  1. In newborns, hydrocele is commonly found, which disappears within first 1 to 2 years of the life without any treatment.
  2. Hydrocele may also develop in boys and adult men due to any injury or inflammation within the scrotum.
  3. Hydrocele is not harmful condition, so it might not require treatment. It is usually painless and may not cause any discomfort.
  4. Hydrocele also disappears itself within six months in adult males without any treatment.
  5. Surgical treatment of Hydrocele only requires if it gets abnormally large, which results in disfigurement and discomfort.

There is possibility that ayurvedic medicines in hydrocele might not work in every case.

Ayurveda Treatment Principles for Hydrocele

According to Ayurveda, VATA DOSHA is dominant in hydrocele development, which is especially associated with KAPHA DOSHA.

The placement of hydrocele is in VATA area, but fluid accumulated denotes the KAPHA. Therefore, the treatment pacifies both VATA and KAPHA is required in such cases.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Hydrocele

The following ayurvedic medicines are beneficial in hydrocele treatment.

Chandraprabha Vati

Chandraprabha Vati is a drug for the VATA placement and for organs of reproductive system. It acts as tonic for these organs and pacifies VATA. In hydrocele, it acts by pacifying the VATA and reduces swelling and inflammation, but alone it may not effective.

Vridhivadhika Vati

Vridhivadhika Vati is a drug of choice for hydrocele. In combination with other remedies, it provides effective solution for hydrocele. In classical text, it is actually recommended for Intestinal Hernia. The dosage given in Bhaishajya Ratnavali is about 4 grams, which may not be tolerable nowadays. (Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Chapter 43, VRIDHI ROGA CHIKITSA, Vridhivadhika Vati, Verse 76 to 80)

Nowadays, 375 to 750 mg dosage of Vridhivadhika Vati is advisable. The higher dosage causes vertigo (reeling sensation), burning sensation, and restlessness.

Arogyavardhini Vati

Arogyavardhini Vati is required if abdominal problems are also associated. It helps reducing symptoms like abdominal distension, intestinal gas, dull abdominal pain, feeling of heaviness in lower abdomen etc.

Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula)

Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula)1 Fruit
Saindhava Lavana250 mg
Castor OilQ.S.

Cook a Haritaki fruit in castor oil. Take out a Haritaki fruit and remove its seed. Now, crush it and mix 250 mg Saindhava Lavana. Eat it every day on empty stomach in the morning.

This formulation is also recommended in Bhaishajya Ratnavali. (Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Chapter 43, VRIDHI ROGA CHIKITSA, Haritaki, Verse 23).

It pacifies VATA and KAPHA, which ultimately helps reducing the size and disappearance of the hydrocele.

Deodara & Daruhaldi Decoction

Deodara5 grams
Daruhaldi 5 grams
Water400 ml

Prepare a decoction using above ingredients and reduce the water to one fourth i.e. 100 ml. Drink this decoction everyday on empty stomach in the morning.

This formulation is also recommended in Bhaishajya Ratnavali. (Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Chapter 43, VRIDHI ROGA CHIKITSA, Verse 10).

Ayurvedic Combination Therapy for Hydrocele

Generally, ayurvedic combination therapy for hydrocele is more effective. The combination of herbs and medicines may provide promising results as compared to single medicine treatment. The following ayurvedic combination is more effective in the treatment of hydrocele.
