Ayurvedic Treatment of Fever

Ayurvedic medicine is the very oldest healing system, which has been used for 5000 to 10000 years in the Indian subcontinental. It is well known for its safety and efficacy in many chronic as well as acute diseases. Ayurvedic treatment is equally effective as conventional medicine. However, a common belief of people is it acts slowly, which is not true. It works equally, but due to being expensive in the case of fever treatment, people never come to ayurveda first, they try conventional medicines. Jwara Symptoms

आलस्यं नयने सास्त्रे जृम्भणं गौरवं क्लमः । ज्वलनातपवाय्वम्बुभक्तिद्वेषावनिश्चितौ ॥२८॥ अविपाकास्यवैरस्ये हानिश्च बलवर्णयोः । शीलवैकृतमल्पं ज्वरलक्षणमग्रजम् ॥२९॥ (Charak Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana, Chapter 3, Verse 28-29)

  1. Laziness.
  2. Lachrymation.
  3. Yawning.
  4. Heaviness.
  5. Mental fatigue.
  6. Uncertainty.
  7. Indigestion.
  8. Anorexia.
  9. Loss of strength.
  10. Loss of glow or complexion.
  11. Changes in behavior or conduct.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Fever

General Ayurvedic treatment for fever includes the following measures:

Fasting (Langhana)

ज्वरे लङ्घनमेवादावुपदिष्टमृते ज्वरात् ॥१३९॥ क्षयानिल भय क्रोध काम शोक श्रमोद्भवात् । लङ्घनेन क्षयं नीते दोषे संधुक्षितेऽनले ॥१४०॥ विज्वरत्वं लघुत्वं च क्षुच्चैवास्योपजायते । प्राणाविरोधिना चैनं चैनं लङ्घनेनोपपादयेत् ॥१४१॥ बलाधिष्ठानमारोग्यं यदर्थोऽयं क्रियाक्रमः ।

Fasting is the most important measure in ayurveda, which is not only prescribed in fever treatment but also effective for all types of diseases.

Fasting helps to alleviate aggravated dosha and reduces Ama dosha.

Shadanga Paniya

Shadanga Paniya should be used in every patient suffering from the fever. It helps to lower the fever and removes the toxins accumulated in the body.

It is a primary medicine for fever and excessive thirst in ayurveda. Every patient to consume it.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Fever

Nevertheless, the ayurvedic treatment also depends on the underlying causes. So hereunder, the description is given for commonly used ayurvedic medicines in fever treatment.

Praval Pishti

Praval Pishti is the most common medicine for fever in ayurveda, which is prescribed to every patient suffering from fever in the following combination:

Praval Pishti500 mg
Giloy Satva500 mg
Mandukaparni – Centella asiatica500 mg
Ativisha – Aconitum heterophyllum250 mg

This mixture can be taken every three to four hours (or 6-8 times a day) to reduce fever along with Shadanga Paniya. I am using this mixture in my practice. It works better than Sanshamani Vati.

Maha Sudarshan Churna

Maha Sudarshan Churna is an ayurvedic antipyretic medicine. It lowers the elevated body temperature, reduces malaise and improves appetite.

Other medicines need to select according to underlying cause and dosha. The above treatment remains same in every case with fever with any underlying pathology.
