Balajeerakadi Kashayam is an ayurvedic medicine mainly used for diseases of respiratory system. It helps to reduce a cough and eases in breathing. It is best when a patient suffers from any respiratory disease associated with white, thick, cloudy and sticky mucus content. The excess mucus production is also an indication for its use.

Prishnaparni – Uraria Picta 1 Part
Ikshu (Sugarcane) Saccharum Officinarum 1 Part
Laja – Parched Grain 1 Part

Pharmacological Actions

Ingredients in Balajeerakadi Kashayam pacify Kapha Aggravation and acts as potent mucolytic agent. It reduces mucus production and reduces accumulated mucus content in the lungs by improving its expectoration and reducing thickness and stickiness. Furthermore, it also acts anti-inflammatory and soothes the lungs. In most cases, it is used along with Pippali Churna (Long Pepper Powder) to enhance its effectiveness for these actions. It is most suitable for patients with a productive cough.

Dosage & Administration

Balajeerakadi Kashayam is available in three preparations:

Balajeerakadi Kashayam Churna

If you are using Balajeerakadi Kashayam Churna, then take 60 grams churna in 960 ml water. Boil to reduce it 120 ml Balajeerakadi liquid. The dosage is 30 to 60 ml.

The general dosage of Decoction (Kwath) prepared with Balajeerakadi Kashayam Churna is as follows.
Children 15 to 30 ml *
Adults 30 to 60 ml *
Maximum Possible Dosage 120 ml Per Day (in divided doses)
* Twice a day
Best Time to Take: Before Food

Balajeerakadi Kashayam Liquid

Balajeerakadi Kashayam Liquid is readymade concentrated decoction and can be used in the following dosage.

The general dosage of Balajeerakadi Kashayam readymade Liquid is as follows.
Children 2.5 to 10 ml *
Adults 5 to 15 ml *
Maximum Possible Dosage 30 ml Per Day (in divided doses)
* Twice a day with 4 times boiled and cooled water
Best Time to Take: Before Food

Balajeerakadi Kashayam Tablets

Balajeerakadi Kashayam Tablets are the extract tablets of the Balajeerakadi decoction.

The general dosage of Balajeerakadi Kashayam Tablets is as follows.
Children 1 tablet *
Adults 2 tablets *
Maximum Possible Dosage 4 tablets Per Day (in divided doses)
* Twice a day with warm water
Best Time to Take: 30 minutes Before Food
Note: The dosage is according to 1000 mg tablet of Balajeerakadi Kashayam.


The best adjuvant is Pippali Churna (long pepper powder). For improving its efficacy, one can also use Sitopaladi Churna along with its consumption.

Safety Profile

All available forms of Balajeerakadi Kashayam are considerably safe and well-tolerated in most individuals when Balajeerakadi formulations are taken in the recommended dosage under the supervision of an ayurvedic physician. Balajeerakadi Kashaya is well suitable for people having Kapha and Vata dominance in symptoms.

Side Effects

There are no side effects observed with Balajeerakadi Kashayam when taken in recommended dosage. Over dosage can cause following side effects:

  • Burning sensation
  • Restlessness (rare)
  • Vertigo (very rare)

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety profile of Balajeerakadi Kashayam is not well established for pregnant women. However, ingredients used in Balajeerakadi Kashaya in provided ratio are not likely to cause any side effects during pregnancy when used for a short-term (less than a week). You should consult an ayurvedic physician before using Balajeerakadi formulations during pregnancy.

Balajeerakadi Kashayam is likely to be safe to consume by lactating mothers. There are no adverse effects reported with the use of Balajeerakadi Kwatham in lactating mothers and breastfeeding babies.
