Ahiphenasava Ingredients, Benefits, Dosage & Side Effects

Ahiphenasava is used for the treatment of severe diarrhea. It helps to reduce the frequency of loose stools in cholera. It has potent antidiarrheal, analgesic and antispasmodic actions. Due to these properties, Ahiphenasava benefits in severe diarrhea, acute diarrhea, gastroenteritis, cholera, abdominal pain and cramps and dysentery.

Ingredients (Composition)

The main ingredients of Ahiphenasava is Ahiphena.

Indrayava – Holarrhena Antidysenterica Seeds4 Parts
Elaichi (Cardamom) – Elettaria Cardamomum4 Parts

Preparation Method: Take Rectified Spirit and add Shuddha Ahiphena in it. Mix it well and then add powders of other ingredients. Leave it in Asava place for a month. Then decant the Ahiphenasava liquid and preserve it in food-grade bottles.

Pharmacological Actions

Ahiphenasava has following medicinal properties:

  • Antidiarrheal.
  • Analgesic.
  • Antispasmodic.
  • Sedative.

Dosha Karma

The main action of Ahiphenasava is observed on Kapha Dosha. It can increase Vata Dosha and Pitta Dosha. Therefore, people with aggravated Vata and Pitta should not use it.

Ahiphenasava is helpful in the following health conditions.

  • Severe Diarrhea or watery stools.
  • Cholera (to reduce the frequency of loose stools).
  • Abdominal Pain and cramps.
  • Gastroenteritis.
  • Dysentery.

Ahiphenasava benefits in severe diarrhea. In ayurvedic medicine, it is used for hundreds of years as a potent antidiarrheal agent.

Diarrhea

Ahiphenasava decreases the frequency of bowel movement. It works by slowing the intestinal movement. Therefore, it is indicated in severe diarrhea. Furthermore, it also reduces abdominal pain associated with diarrhea.

Cholera

Cholera causes severe watery diarrhea, which can also lead to severe dehydration. Ahiphenasava is beneficial to reduce the number and frequency of loose stools and gives relief from severe muscle cramps.

Ahiphenasava Dosage

The classical ayurvedic dosage of Ahiphenasava is as follows:

Children (above the age of 5 years) 1 to 2 drops
Adults 5 to 10 drops
Pregnancy Not Recommended
Lactation Not Recommended
Geriatric Dosage 1 to 2 drops.
Maximum Possible Dosage 20 drops per day

How to Take Ahiphenasava

Anupan (Adjuvant) 30 to 60 ml water.
Dosage Frequency  Twice or thrice daily
Medication Time After a meal or whenever required.

It is consumed in the dosage of 1 to 2 drops for children and 5 to 10 drops for adults twice or thrice a day.

Safety Profile

Ahiphenasava should be used under the supervision of an ayurvedic physician. The unsupervised use can be unsafe, especially for children.

Side Effects of Ahiphenasava

Ahiphenasava can cause some side effects if unwisely used. These side effects include:

  1. Constipation (common).
  2. Difficulty having a bowel movement (common).
  3. Nausea (rare).
  4. Vomiting (very rare).

Note: The overdose can cause severe constipation.

Contraindications

Ahiphenasava should not be taken in following cases:

  1. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.
  2. Constipation.

Ahiphenasava should not be taken if you are pregnant women and lactating mothers. It should not be used as Ahiphena abuse. It can cause constipation, so if you have abdominal pain and suffer from constipation, it is not right medicine in such cases.

  1. Ahiphenasava is very good medicine. Unfortunately, it is not available in the market.

  2. It sounds very similar to a traditional native American preparation that included the heart (bud) of the sawgrass plant.
    And I agree that it should only be used under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician, other than in utmost necessity.
