Health can be defined as the absence of disease. It encompasses the overall physical and mental state of a person. However, the term wellness provides a larger picture. It refers to the state of the person in an optimum physical and mental health, which allows him or her to live a life while performing the personal responsibility efficiently.
The health and wellness of a person do not just include the physical state, but also the fitness in terms of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual spheres. The different aspects of health and wellness are discussed below:
Physical state forms a major aspect of the health of a person. It can be improved by eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and following a healthy lifestyle. People should avoid smoking, alcoholism and the use of recreational drugs to maintain their physical health.
Intellectual health forms the part of the mental health and involves the ability for critical thinking, to concentrate, and be curious. It also includes the memory, learning ability and the cognitive functions of the brain. Developing intellectual wellness is important for being successful in the academic and professional spheres.
Emotional wellness allows a person to be confident, and have a high self-esteem. It helps in building trust and enables a person to understand others’ feelings. A person having an emotionally stable state is able to cope with the difficult circumstances in life with ease.
Interpersonal wellness includes having good communication skills, and the ability to establish healthy, long-term relationships.
It involves the ability to develop compassion, and forgiveness, as well as being caring, and having a sense of purpose in life.
