Allergy is a condition that is caused due to an exaggerated response of the immune system to any substances, which is called an allergen. The allergens may differ from one person to another. Some of the common allergens are dust mites, insects, pets, pollen, molds, foods and even some medicines.

There are several different causes of allergy and the symptoms may vary from mild to significantly life-threatening. Allergy can manifest itself in the forms of several diseases like asthma, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis. The common symptoms of allergy include rashes on the skin, swelling of the throat and the face, itching, and breathlessness.

Most allergic disorders are genetic in origin, which means the people having a family history of an allergic disorder are more prone to develop the same. Also, a person having one allergic disorder is at a higher risk of suffering from the other allergic disorders possibly due to the involvement of the immune system in their development.

An allergic reaction occurs when a person comes in contact with the substance to which he is hypersensitive. This results in the stimulation of the immune system, which triggers an antibody response. Later, these antibodies attach themselves to mast cells, which respond by releasing some substances such as histamine. It is the histamine, which is responsible for causing swelling, inflammation and the other symptoms the patient experiences due to the allergic reaction. That is why the treatment using the conventional drugs as well as the natural remedies is directed at controlling the release of histamine or nullifying its action.
