Home Remedies for Indigestion

Do you burp often? Does your stomach feel full even without completing your meal? Do you suffer from heartburn and acidity? All these are the symptoms of indigestion. A slight discomfort in the upper part of abdomen or a feeling of fullness is known as indigestion.

Indigestion is mostly due to unhealthy eating habits and increased stress levels, which further increases production of gastric juice in stomach leading to indigestion. This is however not a dangerous health condition, but can turn out to be troublesome, if you do not mend eating habits. Here are few natural remedies, which you can follow at home.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Some medical journals have mentioned that indigestion is not due to excess acid in stomach but lack of it. Thanks to apple cider vinegar, which helps in relieving pain caused due to indigestion. Apple cider vinegar is helpful in providing the much required acid to your stomach.

For effective results, add little water, honey to Apple cider vinegar, and consume it to treat indigestion.  Dilute 1 tbsp of honey in a cup of water along with 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar. You can consume it two or three times a day.

Ginger

Ginger will not only spice up your food but will also add the essential aroma to it. It is yet an effective recipe to treat indigestion. Ginger can be added to your food while cooking or you can also have a cup of ginger tea. It helps in production of saliva, gastric and bile juices. Better, have ginger tea instead soda or coffee.

Black Pepper

Lack of hydrochloric acid in your stomach might also lead to indigestion and black pepper can effectively treat this condition. Black pepper can help increase flow of gastric juices and treats indigestion. You can also take it along with buttermilk to relieve pain caused due to gas and indigestion.

Garlic

This little ingredient has super properties for stimulating gastric system to get rid of indigestion. The pungent taste of garlic is what makes it function efficiently. You can eat raw garlic cloves or consume it along with soup. This grandma’s recipe shows great results in treating indigestion. You can also use it to prepare an herbal decoction by adding garlic cloves, cumin seeds and black pepper. Let it boil and strain this mixture. Consume it when warm. Drink this decoction twice a day to see great results.

Chamomile

Few scientists have recommended that chamomile when consumed regularly can treat indigestion. It calms and soothes stomach and intestinal tract. You can consume it in the form of tea or also as a tincture at least thrice a day to see effective results.

Coriander

Coriander helps in treating upset stomach and indigestion problems. Its essential oils have fungicidal, carminative, bactericidal, antiseptic and muscle relaxant properties. You can add roasted seeds of coriander to buttermilk and consume it twice a day to get rid of burning sensation caused due to indigestion.

Calm it with Papaya and Pineapple

Both these fruits contain enzymes known as proteolytics, which help in breaking down proteins. Both these fruits help in treating indigestion. You can also have fruits such as figs and kiwi after your meals, which help in breaking down proteins thereby speeding up your digestion process.

Aloe Juice

Aloe Vera has soothing properties and helps in treating burning sensation. It helps in soothing your stomach and also reduces the burning sensation. This means when you sense burning sensation in your stomach, you can simply have a cup of aloe juice, which can help calm it instantly.

Pamper yourself with an apple and banana

Natural antacids in banana can help in soothing an upset stomach. You can also have an apple a day to prevent discomfort or pain caused due to an upset stomach or other indigestion problems.

Fennel seeds

Are you suffering from indigestion due to spicy foods? Having fennel seeds daily can cure this problem. Oil in fennel seeds (Saunf) helps control flatulence and nausea which are few symptoms of indigestion. You need to dry, roast and grind it to powder. You need to add a tbsp. of fennel powder to a cup of water. Consume it regularly and get rid of any problems related to digestion.

Clove

This wonderful herb has several medicinal and culinary uses. Cloves help in increasing gut mobility as well as gastrointestinal secretions thereby helping treat indigestion problems. You can consume it directly or use clove oil to get rid of indigestion problems.

Baking soda

To fight against the excess acids in your stomach, baking soda acts as an effective antacid. Soda in it can help neutralize extra hydrochloric acid in your stomach forming water and salt. Add half tbsp. of baking soda in a glass of water and consume it on an empty stomach. It offers faster relief from indigestion.

Cardamom

A common ingredient, cardamom which is available at your home can come to your rescue to treat indigestion. It helps in soothing your stomach and treating indigestion. The volatile oil in cardamom can cure several digestive disorders including indigestion. You can consume cardamom seeds directly or you can add roasted cardamom powder to your vegetables while cooking. You can either consume it as tea. Drinking cardamom tea at least twice a day can speed up your digestion process.

Carom seeds

Carom seeds that are often found in our kitchen are helpful in treating digestive disorders. It is one such effective remedy helpful in treating any digestive problems. Carom seeds aids in production of gut juices thereby enhancing the process of digestion. You can swallow around 5-6 carom seeds directly on an empty stomach to get relieved from symptoms of indigestion.

Lemon

Lemon tastes tangy but lemon helps in preventing and curing indigestion problems. Add lemon juice to a glass of hot water and drink it early in the morning. It helps purify blood and enhances the process of digestion by stimulating secretion of bile juices.

All these wonderful natural ingredients are readily available at your kitchen and can help in treating indigestion and other digestive disorders.
