How to Make Hand Sanitizer at Home

Currently, we are facing a shortage of commercially made hand sanitizers. Please remember washing your hands with soap properly is always better than using hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers should be used when you cannot wash your hands due to the non-availability of water or soap. In this article, I will explain how you can make a hand sanitizer at home.

How to Make Hand Sanitizer at Home

Ingredients Proportion Example Quantity
Isopropyl Alcohol (Spirit) 75% 75 ml
Sterile Water or cold boiled water 25% 25 ml

Sterilizing Water: Boiling water helps in its sterilization. Just remember let it cool down before mixing it in Isopropyl Alcohol.

  1. First, pour Isopropyl Alcohol in a glass container.
  2. Then, add cold boiled water.
  3. Close the container with an airtight lid and mix well.
  4. Leave it for 3 days before use. This time allows killing the microbes, which may still present in the container.
  5. After 3 days, start using it as a hand sanitizer.

This is a simple and quick formula that is highly effective to remove microbes from the hands. You can use it as a hand sanitizer.

WHO Recommended Formula (ref)

Isopropyl Alcohol (Spirit) 75.15 ml
Sterile Water or cold boiled water 19.23 ml
Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) 4.17 ml
Glycerol or glycerine 1.45 ml
  1. First, pour Isopropyl Alcohol in a glass container.
  2. Add Hydrogen Peroxide.
  3. Add Glycerol or glycerine. Glycerol is a sticky substance, so you should rinse a measuring cylinder with cold boiled water and put that water in the container.
  4. In last, add the remaining cold boiled water.
  5. Close the container with an airtight lid and mix well.
  6. Leave it for 3 days before use. This time allows killing the microbes, which may still present in the container.
  7. After 3 days, start using it as a hand sanitizer.

Hand Sanitizer Formula for Sensitive Hands

Ingredients Proportion Example Quantity
Isopropyl Alcohol (Spirit) 75% 75 ml
Aloe Vera Juice 10% 10 ml
Rose Water 15% 15 ml

Mix all ingredients in the given ratio and leave the mixture for 3 days. You can use the mixture after 3 days as a hand sanitizer.

Note: For maintaining the maximum effectiveness of homemade hand sanitiser, you must take 75% of Isopropyl Alcohol (Spirit) in each formula.

All the above ingredients are easily available in the market. Isopropyl Alcohol (Spirit), Glycerine and Hydrogen Peroxide are available from chemist shops.
