How to Use Triphala for Eyes

Triphala is known for its protective effects on eyes. According to Ashtanga Hridaya, Triphala is an excellent tonic for the eyes. It improves eyesight and prevents all types of eye diseases. The question is – how to use triphala for eyes’ health.

त्रिफलां मधु सर्पि निशि नेत्रबलाय च। स्वास्थ्यानुवृत्तिकृद्यच्च रोगोच्छेदकरं च यत् ॥४॥ (Ah. S. Ch. 8).

How to Use Triphala for Eyes

Vagbhata in Ashtang Hridaya has given an accurate method of taking triphala for eyes. However, he has not given the quantity of triphala and other ingredients. The quantity depends on your digestive capacity and tolerability. I found the following dosage suitable for almost every adult.

Triphala Powder 3 grams
Cow’s Ghee 2.5 – 5 grams
Honey 5 – 10 grams
  1. Take Triphala Powder in a bowl.
  2. Add melted ghee measuring in grams (by weight).
  3. Mix it in triphala powder.
  4. Then add honey measuring in grams (by weight).
  5. Mix all ingredients well.
  6. Take this mixture at night.

If you feel any difficulty while taking this mixture, you can swallow it with the help of warm water.

Triphala Benefits of Eyes

Triphala has antioxidant effects, which helps to maintain eye health. It also has other health benefits. For this, you can read: Triphala Benefits and uses. In this article, we will cover triphala benefits for the eyes.

Prevents Cataract

Triphala prevents cataract, according to an animal study. In this study, mice are grouped into two categories:

  1. Controlled Group.
  2. Triphala Pretreatment Group.

Then cataract is induced with selenite. The experiment found 100% of mice developed a nuclear cataract in the controlled group. Whereas only 20% of mice developed a nuclear cataract in triphala pretreatment group.

In this study, Triphala has shown potent antioxidant properties by restoring the level of glutathione in the eye lenses and increasing superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. (1, 2)

Therefore, Triphala has anticataract effects. The regular use of triphala can help you to avoid cataract later in your age.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Triphala eye drops are found effective in computer vision syndrome. In a study, Triphala eye drops use along with Saptamrit Lauh has found the most effective combination for reducing symptoms of computer vision syndrome. (3)

The primary ingredient of Saptamrit Lauh is also triphala. The long-term use of Triphala can also provide similar benefits, as reported in this study. You can use Triphala eye wash if triphala eye drops are not available to you.

In the classical text, Triphala should be used according to the above method, which is found effective in preventing and treating several eye conditions. However, more research work is required in this field.
