It might be a healthy substitute of industrial sugar or chemically processed and cleaned sugar. However, nutritional value of jaggery might not satisfy you for vitamins and minerals, but these nutrients are also not present in sugar that you are using.

  1. Jaggery contains natural phyto-chemicals, which activates the digestion and helps in correcting digestive problems. Many people in India use jaggery with black pepper to increase appetite. Sugar does not have this characteristic.
  2. You can use jaggery, honey and ginger for getting relief from cough, cold and breathing troubles. Sugar can worsen cough by increasing production of phlegm.
  3. Both sugar and jaggery do not contain many vitamins and minerals, but jaggery still retain some minerals as compared to sugar.
  4. Jaggery is used in traditional Indian medicines for muscular and neurological problems. However, it may not have any medicinal value, but it is used as adjuvant with many folklore medicines.
  5. If you have headache, then jaggery can help you for getting relief from this.
  6. 10 grams Jaggery contains 3% iron of daily value. It can be used to support other medicines used for increasing hemoglobin level.
  7. Jaggery can also help you to stop hiccups. You can also take it by mixing with ginger juice to get relief from hiccup, breathing troubles, nasal congestion and chest tightness.
  8. Jaggery is useful for controlling blood pressure. Sugar does not possess this quality.
