Kasis Bhasma Benefits, Medicinal Uses & Side Effects

Kasis Bhasma is a mineral-based ayurvedic medicine, which contains ferrous sulfate as a main ingredient. Due to iron content, it is helpful in the treatment of anemia and menstrual disorders.

Kasis Bhasma is also useful in the management of diseases including loss of appetite, indigestion, heaviness of abdomen, splenomegaly and premature graying of hairs.

Chemical Composition

Kasis is a Hindi name for green vitriol, which is Ferrous sulfate.

Chemical formula

FeSO4

Ferrous Sulfate is also used in mainstream medicines for the treatment of anemia, but Kasis Bhasma is calcined form of Ferrous sulfate, so its bioavailability is higher than raw ferrous sulfate.

Kasis Bhasma mainly acts on blood, uterus, liver, spleen, stomach and intestines. Therefore, it is beneficial in diseases related to these organs. Here are some important medicinal uses and health benefits of Kasis Bhasma.

Iron Deficiency Anemia

Kasis Bhasma has a rich content of iron. The preparation method of Kasis Bhasma involves reduction and calcination under high temperature and triturating with Aloe Vera Gel. It increases hemoglobin levels and reduces symptoms of extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, frequent infections, lightheadedness and dizziness. All these symptoms occur when an individual is deficient in iron.

Amenorrhea

Kasis Bhasma is a good ayurvedic remedy for primary and secondary amenorrhea. In both cases, it acts as emmenagogue, so it promotes menstrual flows. The effects of Kasis Bhasma appear within first 15 days. If woman is not getting menstrual period even after 15 days, she may need some advanced ayurvedic medicines. It has mild emmenagogue effects. Heeng (Asafoetida) is also used along with Kasis Bhasma to boost its emmenagogue effects.

Kasisadi vati (Raja Pravartini Vati), an ayurvedic preparation, contains Kasis Bhasma and Asafetida as main ingredients. It is also used for amenorrhea.

Dysmenorrhea

Kasis Bhasma has anti-spasmodic action due to which it is very useful in membranous dysmenorrhea. It reduces pain and cramps during menstrual period. You may require starting it 7 days before due date and repeating it for three menstrual cycles. You should stop taking it after completion of menstrual cycle.

Oligomenorrhea

Some patients have a problem of abnormally infrequent and light menstruation. Kasis Bhasma is a good remedy for Oligomenorrhea. It should be used in similar way as explained under heading of dysmenorrhea.

Fatty Liver

Kasis Bhasma reduces fats and cholesterol in the body. It also reduces fats from the liver, so it is beneficial for fatty liver syndrome. It also improves appetite by inducing bile secretion from the liver.

Dosage

Kasis Bhasma dosage varies from 125 mg to 375 mg once or twice a day.

Caution & Side Effects

However, Kasis Bhasma is well tolerated in most people, but it may cause following side effects in some rare cases.

  1. Nausea
  2. Vomiting
  3. Vertigo

Other side effects reported with Ferrous Sulfate such as stomach discomfort, difficulty breathing, constipation or diarrhea are not reported with the use of Kasis Bhasma.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Due to Emmenagogue effects of Kasis Bhasma, it is POSSIBLY UNSAFE in pregnancy and Breastfeeding.

Contraindications

You should not use Kasis Bhasma in following cases.

  1. Allergy with ferrous sulfate
  2. Ulcer
  3. Ulcerative colitis
  4. Ulcerated colon
  5. Hemolytic Anemia

  1. I took tablet Bangshil (2 tabs BD) for 3 weeks. Bangtail contains bhasma of tin @ ferrous sulphate. I have developed side effects of extreme fatigue, insomnia, gastritis & night sweats. Is there any way to rid my body of these toxins?

    1. After stopping this medicine, Bang (Tin) Bhasma will be eliminated within several days by itself. Around 75% excretion occurs within two days after stopping it. The remaining will excrete over several days. You just require improve your diet. For several days, increase fruits intake

  2. Hi, I am suffering from splenomegaly and mixed anemia and left side lower ribs pain. So shall I go for Kasis Bhasma?
