Kumar Kalyan Ras

Kumar Kalyan Ras (also spelled as Kumarkalyana Rasa) is an ayurvedic paediatric medicine used for fever, breathing troubles, persistent cough, jaundice, rickets, weakness of the bones, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, underweight and congenital heart diseases.

Kumar Kalyan Ras also enhances immunity and reduces frequency of upper respiratory infections and other infectious diseases. In ayurveda, it is general medicine for children, who are weak or suffer from recurrent infections and pneumonia.

Benefits & Medicinal Uses

Ancient ayurvedic scholars have formulated Kumar Kalyan Ras in such way that it can be beneficial in all diseases occurring in infants and children. It is effective in all diseases of lungs, brain, heart, liver, bones, muscles etc.

Kumar Kalyan Ras pacifies all three humors (Tridosha VATA, PITTA & KAPHA). It provides strength to the body and increases mental awareness and alertness in children. The Swarna Bhasma, Mukta Pishti and Abhrak Bhasma in Kumar Kalyan Ras also improve immunity and brainpower in children.

Recurrent Respiratory Infections

However, 5 to 9 times per year child can suffer seasonal diseases. In such cases, no additional treatment is necessary. However, in some children, respiratory infections occur too frequently like after 15 days or in every month. In such cases, Kumar Kalyan Ras is also beneficial. Kumar Kalyan Ras improves and builds immunity against several bacteria and viruses, which ultimately protects children from recurrent infections.  In such case, Kumar Kalyan Ras should be given with Sitopaladi Churna and honey.

Muscle Weakness (Hypotonia) in Children

Hypotonia is defined as decreased muscle tone, which may have several underlying causes. These can be congenital hypotonia, muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy. In ayurveda, for all these underlying diseases, Kumar Kalyan Ras is used. Kumar Kalyan Ras provides strength to muscles, improves neurological coordination, and increases muscle tone. Ashwagandha and milk are best adjuvants for Kumar Kalyan Ras in such diseases. Other remedies may also require according to symptoms and actual health conditions, which may vary in each child with these diseases.

General Child Weakness & Debility

Kumar Kalyan Ras is also effective in general physical weakness or debility in children. It improves digestion, appetite, and promotes general well-being. For this purpose, Arvindasava is accurate adjuvant for Kumar Kalyan Ras. Many children lose their appetite and weight after a prolong sickness. In such cases, Kumar Kalyan Ras along with Arvindasava is also very beneficial.

Dosage & Administration

The general dosage of Kumar Kalyan Ras is as follows.
Infants (0-1 year of age)15 mg *
Toddlers (1-3 years of age)30 mg *
Preschoolers (3-5 years of age)45 mg *
Children (Over 6 years of age)60 mg *
Maximum Possible Dosage125 mg per day (in divided doses)
* Twice Daily with Arvindasava (Aravindasavam)
When to Take: After Food

Safety Profile

Kumar Kalyan Ras has been used in ayurvedic paediatric medicine for more than 1000 years in India. However, the safety profile is not available on modern parameters.

Side Effects

No side effects observed and reported with the regular of use Kumar Kalyan Ras within the dosage specified above for 6 weeks.

Precaution

In short-term treatment (less than 2 weeks), the dosage can be given as specified. However, the dosage of Kumar Kalyan Ras should be decreased to half when required for using on long-term basis. The maximum continuous use of Kumar Kalyan Ras should be less than 6 weeks. In case, it is required more than 6 weeks, then it should be skipped for 2 weeks and then it can be given again for another 6 weeks.

    1. Kumar Kalyan Ras is beneficial in all conditions concerned to the child. It also provides strength to the brain. Still it is not suitable remedy for Autism. It can be used as adjuvant for other remedies to enhance their action. In Autism, long-term medication required, but Kumar Kalyan Ras cannot be used more than 4 to 6 weeks.

      The better choice is Kalyan Churna, Kalyan Leyham and some herbs. We will soon publish ayurvedic treatment guidelines for Autism. We have scheduled it in next week. All details will be in that article. I hope that article may help.
