Indukantham Ghee (Ghritam)

Indukantham Ghee (Ghritam) is a medicated ayurvedic Ghee (clarified cow’s ghee). It is useful in the management of abdominal diseases including gaseous distension, loss of appetite, bloating, flatulence, intestinal gas, abdominal spasm or colic etc. It mainly acts on Vata Dosha and reduces its aggravation. It is generally indicated in abdominal disorders with the dominance of Vata Symptoms. In addition to this, it enhances immunity, improves complexion and strengthens the body.

Ingredients (Composition)

Ingredients of Indukantham Ghee are described in Sahasrayogam. It is prepared using Cow’s Ghee and following ingredients.

  1. Putikaranja (Chirabilwa) – Holoptelea Integrifolia
  2. Devdaru (Deodar Cedar or Himalayan Cedar) – Cedrus Deodara
  3. Aegle Marmelos – Bilva (Indian Bael)
  4. Desmodium Gangeticum – Shalaparni
  5. Gmelina Arborea – Gambhari (Beechwood/Kasmari)
  6. Oroxylum Indicum – Shyonaka
  7. Premna Serratifolia (Premna Mucronata & Premna Integrifolia) – Agnimantha (Arani)
  8. Solanum Indicum – Brihati (Indian Nightshade)
  9. Solanum Xanthocarpum – Kantakari
  10. Stereospermum Suaveolens – Patala
  11. Tribulus Terrestris – Gokshura
  12. Uraria Picta – Prishnaparni
  13. Chavya (Java Long Pepper) – Piper Chaba
  14. Chitrak – Plumbago Zeylanica
  15. Pippali Fruit (Long pepper) – Piper Longum
  16. Pippali Roots (Piplamool) – Piper Longum
  17. Sonth – Zingiber Officinale
  18. Yavakshara – Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) Kshaar

Indukantham Ghee has following healing properties.

The therapeutic action of Indukantham Ghee is observed mainly in stomach and intestine. Its anti-flatulent, carminative and antispasmodic actions reduce gas formation, gaseous distension, cramps, pain, and constipation.

Ayurvedic Properties

Indukantham Ghee contains Cow’s Ghee and other ingredients, which mainly work on Vata Dosha. It is an ideal preparation for Vata disorders related to abdominal organs with symptoms like:

  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Astringent taste in mouth
  • Bloating
  • Colicky pain
  • Constipation with dry and hard stools
  • Darkening of the skin
  • Emaciation
  • Excessive thirst
  • Feeling of strength loss
  • Pain
  • Weakness
  • Gastritis
  • Non-ulcerative dyspepsia

Indukantham Ghee is also a better choice as compared to Indukantham Kashayam when Vata is associated with Pitta Dosha. However, its ingredients also have actions against Kapha Dosha, but still Indukantham Kashayam is a better choice for Vata Dosha associated with Kapha Dosha. The base (i.e. Cow’s Ghee) in Indukantham Ghee slightly reduces its effects on Kapha Dosha but increases it effects on Vata Dosha.

  2. Flatulence

Dosage & Administration

The general dosage of Indukantham Ghee is as follows:

Infants (Age: Up To 12 Months)1 to 2.5 ml *
Children2.5 to 5 ml *
Adults5 to 15 ml *
Geriatric (above 60 yrs)5 to 10 ml *
Maximum Possible Dosage30 ml Per Day (in divided doses)
Twice a day with warm water and a pinch of Sendha Namak
Time to take: Before Food or in between meals
