Mayur Chandrika Bhasma
Mayur Chandrika Bhasma (mayur piccha bhasma) is a classical ayurvedic medicine, which has antiemetic and antispasmodic properties. The most common indication of Mayur Chandrika Bhasma is nausea and vomiting. It is also beneficial in hiccup, cough and asthma.
Ingredients (Composition) of Mayur Chandrika Bhasma
Mayur Chandrika Bhasma is prepared from peacock feathers. Peacock feathers contain melanin pigment, which gives them brown color. Bright colors in peacock feature are due to its inherent structure, which have several tiny holes. These holes are arranged into a hexagonal pattern. The reflection of the light through this structure gives the perception of different colors including red, blue, green etc.
Chemically, Mayur Pankh (peacock feather) contains copper, manganese, iron and zinc. (1)
Mayura Piccha Bhasma has neutral pH value. It is soluble in ethyl alcohol. However, the different methods of its preparation may result in its different characteristics. Some samples (prepared at high temperature – 1000 °C) are also sparingly soluble in distilled water.
Bhasma prepared with Gaja Puta Method (temperature – 1000 °C) contains ash and some inorganic elements. It contains copper, zinc, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, manganese and aluminum. However, the quantity of these elements present in this bhasma is in the permissible range and essential for human body. The bhasma also contains flavonoids and saponins. (2)
Preparation Method of Mayur Chandrika Bhasma
Peacock feathers are taken and burnt with Cow’s Ghee (Clarified Butter). The ash obtained after burning the peacock feathers is known as Mayur Chandrika Bhasma or Mayur Piccha bhasma. Generally, colorful central part is taken for making bhasma.

Mayur Chandrika Bhasma has four characteristics:

- Mild Bronchodilatory

Mayur Chandrika Bhasma has two main indications.
- Nausea & Vomiting
- Hiccup
- Asthma
However, it is also used in cough and asthma, but it has very little effects for treating these conditions alone. Therefore, the herbal combinations are required to take optimum benefits from the Mayur Chandrika Bhasma in asthma and cough.

Hiccup
Mayur Chandrika Bhasma has hiccup suppressant action. However, we found it does not have good results if used alone. It works better in following combination:

Asthma
Mayur Chandrika Bhasma along with Pushkarmool and Pippali Churna is used for the management of the asthma and breathing troubles. It can be used in following way.

Pushkarmool – Inula Racemosa | 250 mg |
Pippali Churna | 250 mg |
Honey | 1 teaspoon |
This mixture should be taken twice daily. In acute attack of asthma, it should be licked in smaller doses and repeated every 5 minutes until patient feel better. Three months course with this treatment gives good results in patients with asthma. |

Side Effects of Mayur Chandrika Bhasma
There are no side effects reported with mayura piccha bhasma.
Pregnancy & Lactation
According to the theoretical analysis of the composition of Mayura Piccha Bhasma, it seems to be possibly safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used for a short duration (less than 2 weeks). However, consult an ayurvedic physician before using this medicine during pregnancy and lactation.
