Natural Remedies for Cataracts

Cataract is a very common eye disease characterized by blurred vision, double vision and discoloration of pupil. Cataract home remedies are natural solutions to treat cataracts at home without undergoing hassles of surgery. However, it works only in initial stages and these remedies can prevent further vision loss due to the cataract.

Remedies help to prevent cataract

The use of following remedies in daily life prevents cataract and opacification or clouding of the natural eye lens. These remedies are not beneficial for dissolving cataract.

Carrot

Carrot is a rich source of vitamin A and consumption of ample amount of vitamin A is essential in treating eye disorders. Therefore, regular intake of one or two glasses of fresh carrot juice proves beneficial in cataract treatment.

Spinach and tomato

Both spinach and tomato are loaded with beta-carotene and antioxidants. Hence, regular consumption of these can be quite useful in reversing the effects of cataracts.

Garlic

It acts as a cleanser of the crystalline lens of eyes. Thus, chewing two to three cloves of garlic on a regular basis can be helpful in treating cataracts.

Almond soaked milk

Irritation and redness of eyes are closely associated with cataracts. You can overcome these problems by applying almond soaked milk drops on the affected eyelid. Use unadulterated (pure) cow’s milk for soaking almonds. For the nutrients of almonds to penetrate the milk, almonds should be soaked in milk overnight.

Triphala

Triphala is beneficial for eyes and prevent eye diseases. You can take triphala powder after meal with water. This remedy also helps in preventing aging and digestive problems.

Home remedies effective in initial stages of cataracts

The following natural remedies help in initial stage of cataract.

Rosewater, lemon juice & honey

You can manage initial symptoms of cataract with the help of lemon juice and rosewater.

  1. Take 10 ml sterilized rose water, 5 ml lemon juice and 2.5 ml honey.
  2. Mix the all three ingredients well.

Instill 2 drops of this solution daily three times a day. It helps to preclude further damage to the eyes. It is also effective in eliminating blurred vision problem of cataract.

Triphala water

You can use triphala water to prevent further clouding of eye lens. It can be used if you want to delay the surgery for cataract.

  1. Take 1/2 teaspoon of triphala powder and a half-liter water.
  2. Boil the water with triphala and strain the liquid in a glass.
  3. Let it cool down and let the residues settle down in the bottom of glass.
  4. Now, slowly transfer water from the glass to another glass.
  5. Wash your eyes with this triphala water.

It helps to reduce opacity of lens and helps in cataract.

Home remedies in later stages of cataract

These remedies can be used in all stages of cataract. These remedies help to prevent further damage, improve vision, reduce clouding of natural lens and may to get rid of cataract.

Onion, ginger, lemon and honey

Pure Honey50 grams

A mixture should be prepared with 10 gm of onion juice, 10 gm of ginger juice, 10 gm of lemon juice and 50 gm of honey. This mixture should be stored in a clean bottle and cold place.

You can preserve this solution in refrigerator for a month.

Instill 2 drops of this mixture into your each eye every day in order to get rid of cataract. It works only in initial stages of cataract.

Warning

You should not use this solution after eye surgery for at least 6 to 12 months.

Almond & coconut remedy

Coconut Dried100 grams
Amla Powder (Indian Gooseberry)50 grams
Green Cardamom seeds20 grams
Cloves Powder10 grams
Coriander seeds10 grams
White pepper10 grams
  1. Make powder of almonds, it will seem wet due to oil present in almonds. Do not worry it is also beneficial.
  2. Also, make powder of coconut and green cardamom seeds.
  3. Now, mix all ingredients and store in a glass jar.

Eat this mixture 1 tsp. twice a day after meal, especially at night just before sleep. It improves eyesight, stops cataract development and supports other cataract remedies by strengthening eyes.

Castor oil eye drops

Castor oil is also used for cataract. It may delay cataract surgery. Many people claim that castor oil can also dissolve cataract.

In our experience, we do not find it effective to cure or dissolve cataract, but many of our patients find it effective for improving vision and delaying cataract surgery.

The concept of using castor oil is behind its lubrication action. It is a common remedy for dry eyes. Dry eyes can cause inflammation in the eyes, which may ultimately lead to opacification of natural lens, so dry eyes can contribute to cataract in eyes.

This remedy is also beneficial for patients having dry eyes problem. It might help in cataract too.

If you have decided to use castor oil eye drops, then continue using it for 3 to 6 months for better results.

Warning

Castor oil eye drops should be used at night or before rest. It can itself cause some blurred vision due to the oiliness.

Supplements for Cataract

The following supplements can assist in cataract.

Papain (papaya proteinase)

It is an enzyme found in papayas widely known as a protein digestion aid.

Sometimes, digestion of proteins becomes a troublesome affair in cataract patients and these undigested proteins lead to clouding of eye lens and severe cataract formations.

Papain is usually recommended in the form of a supplement for treating the existing problems of cataract and to prevent them from worsening further.

Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass has already proved its efficacy in removing the haze brought by cataracts from eyes. Therefore, wheatgrass in either the form of juice or supplement should be included in regular diet.

Bilberry

Bilberry, an integral member of the family of berries acts as a great remedy to eliminate the haziness of vision. This is possible due to its enrichment with anthocyanosides, power-packed flavonoids protecting the retina and lens of eyes from oxidation related damage.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C supplements can be beneficial in treating and preventing cataract formations.
