Pineapple Sage Tea, Preparation Method, Benefits & Side Effects

Pineapple sage is botanically known as salvia elegans. The leaves of pineapple sage plant have a pleasant sweet, strong aroma suggestive of pineapple.  Pineapple sage tea is a wonderful herbal tea and has several medicinal properties. This tangy and calming sage tea was traditionally used to treat sleeping disorders, fever etc. However, it is now being used to treat several other health problems as well.

Pineapple sage leaves are used for culinary purposes.  This wonderful herb is often grown at home. Aside from adding flavor to your food, it also serves several medicinal purposes.

Pineapple sage tea has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, carminative and antimicrobial properties. It is diuretic, stimulant as well as an expectorant. It is also a good source of vitamin A and Vitamin K.

Tonic for digestion

Having a cup of this calming sage tea can cure dyspepsia and indigestion problems. Sage leaves can also help relax or soothe an upset stomach and help increase appetite.

Sage leaves have anti-gas and diuretic properties and can be used externally as a compress to reduce intestinal discomfort, gas as well as stomach cramps.

This tangy pineapple sage tea can relieve nausea, indigestion, colitis and helps increase the flow of the bile besides stimulating other digestive enzymes.

Sage plant contains certain kind of compounds and tannins that help bind proteins together. Pineapple sage tea has expectorant and astringent properties, which help relieve sinusitis, cold, fever etc. This herbal tea can help increase sweat naturally, reduce mucus and expel phlegm. Increase in sweat can remove toxins faster, which might cause cold like symptoms.

Consuming a cup of warm pineapple sage tea two or three times every day can help you especially in cold weather conditions. Sage leaves can also be used as an infusion in vaporizer.

Excessive sweating

Cold pineapple sage tea can however control the secretion of sweat. Hence, it is recommended to drink around three cups of cold pineapple sage tea to control excessive sweating.

Balances hormones

Pineapple sage tea has estrogenic properties, which help treat menopausal symptoms such as night sweats and hot flashes. MINERVA GINECOLOGICA, an Italian journal published a study, which was conducted on 30 women by giving them this herbal extract along with alfalfa for around a period of three months. Out of which around 20 women have mentioned that hot flashes disappeared completely while the rest have reported a good improvement in their condition. Hence, the best way to use this sage leaves is either in the form of cold tea or compress. Sage helps stimulate uterus hence breastfeeding and pregnant women are not advised to have it unless recommended by their doctor.

Treats memory loss and other similar ailments

Sage tea can help treat ailments related to ageing and memory loss as well, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. Few research studies have mentioned that sage tea can help stimulate nerves and improve mental health as well.

Lowers Cholesterol

A study has reported that pineapple sage tea when consumed regularly helped reduce cholesterol. In the year 2009, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCE has conducted a study among a group of people by allowing them to drink sage tea regularly for around four weeks. The results were very outstanding. There has been huge drop down of bad cholesterol levels besides improvement in the total cholesterol levels of the person.

Weight loss

Pineapple sage tea can help enhance your body’s metabolism thereby promoting weight loss. However, there has been no proper evidence to prove this statement. However, sage tea when consumed regularly can treat problems related to indigestion. The proper digestion will boost your body’s metabolism that might help in weight loss.

  • Sage extracts can also improve hair health as well.
  • Research studies have also found that this herbal tea can be helpful in treating type-2 diabetes effectively.

Caution and Side effects

Pineapple sage tea or decoction when taken in limited quantities is effective for various health conditions, but a few side effects might show up, if this herb is taken in larger quantities in the form of tea or oil.

Cautions

  1. You should avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  2. It might also cause convulsions when taken in larger amounts due to the presence of α-thujone, a toxic substance in it.
  • It might also react with other medicines especially diabetic people must consult their general physician to know about the side effects of pineapple sage when taken in the form of herbal tea.
