Herbal Tea

Herbal tea is a beverage prepared from the decoction or infusion of herbs, and spices. The use of herbal tea dates back to several centuries as is evident from the ancient Egyptian and Chinese texts that discuss the uses and enjoyment of the herbal teas.

Herbal teas can be consumed hot or cold. They are typically prepared by allowing these herbs and spices to brew in hot water for the recommended period. The process allows the active constituents in the herbs steeping into the liquid. The tea, thus prepared, can offer the medicinal benefits of the herbs.

An herbal tea is distinguished from the other tea such as black tea, or white teas, which are prepared from the leaves of a tea plant, Camellia Sinensis. Herbal tea is highly refreshing and can help a person feel energetic just like a cup of tea or coffee. However, herbal teas are considered healthier than the other beverages as they do not contain caffeine and are not addictive.

Herbal teas are a great alternative to caffeinated teas. Herbal teas are free from caffeine content, but they are abundant in antioxidants. These teas provide health benefits according to their principle ingredients. You can also prepare herbal tea from a single herb or plant and from the mixture of similar herbs.

Method of preparation of an herbal tea

Herbal tea can be prepared from a single herb or more than one herb and spice. The most commonly used herbs and spices for making herbal tea include Holy Basil, Cinnamon, Neem, and Cardamom. The parts of these herbs are added to a cup of boiling water and it is allowed to brew for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, it is covered with a lid and allowed to stay for another 5 minutes. The liquid is later strained and consumed.
