Shadbindu Tail (Oil) – Ayurvedic Medicine for Sinusitis and Nasal Polyps

Shadbindu Tail (Oil) is herbal and ayurvedic medicated oil used for sinusitis and sinus infections. It is one of the famous Nasya Oils used in Ayurveda. Shadbindu oil is a main medicine used in NASYA Panchakarma Therapy. It is also useful in the treatment of septal deviations or turbinate hypertrophy.

Shadbindu Tail has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action, so it is helpful in all types of nasal and sinus infections. It also relieves headache, treats hair fall and baldness.

Ingredients of Shadbindu Tail

The oil base of Shadbindu Tail is Sesame oil. All other herbs and herbal juices are processed in sesame oil.

How to make Shadbindu Tail

  • Prepare herbal paste using Bhringraj (Eclipta Alba) Juice.
  • Now, mix all ingredients including sesame oil, goat’s milk, Bhringraj (Eclipta Alba) Juice and herbal paste.
  • Simmer the sesame oil with other ingredients until only oil remains.
  • Separate all residues present in the oil using fine strainer.
  • Now, Shadbindu Tail is ready and let it cool down for some time. After that, keep it in a glass container.

Uses & Benefits of Shadbindu Tail

The main action of Shadbindu Tail is on nasal cavity, sinuses and upper part of the body including brain, scalp, hairs, jawbone, mouth and eyes. Here are some main uses and benefits of Shadbindu Oil.

Sinusitis & Sinus Infections

Shadbindu Tail has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Therefore, it can help fighting infections of sinuses and reduces inflammation in sinusitis.

Sinusitis has two main types. Acute sinusitis usually occurs due to viral, bacterial or fungal infection. However, Shadbindu Tail is not greatly effective in these cases, but it can speed up the recovery when used for instilling in the nose along with antibiotics. It helps draining mucus, reduces blockage and lowers facial pain.

In some cases, patients have thick, yellow greenish discharge from the nose and sinuses are filled with pus. In this case, Shadbindu Tail is also effective for the drainage of pus and reduces blockage.

In Chronic sinusitis, Shadbindu Tail is more effective. Nasal polyps, allergic reaction and deviated nasal septum are most common causes of chronic sinusitis. Shadbindu Tail can help eliminating all these underlying causes.

Nasal Polyp

Nasal polyp is a painless, soft and noncancerous growth in the nasal passage. It can be single or multiple. It may also present in sinuses. These polyps are common cause of chronic inflammation of upper respiratory tract and can become precipitating factor for allergies, asthma and certain immune disorders. Usually, nasal polyps result in breathing troubles, nose blockage and frequent infections. Some people may also experience loss of sense of smell.

Shadbindu Tail is effective in reducing size of nasal polyps, improving sense of smell, preventing frequent infections and reducing nasal blockage. It shrinks the size of nasal polyp and then helps eliminating it complete. It may take 3 to 6 months course with Shadbindu Tail to get rid of nasal polyps completely.

Dosage & Administration

The general dosage is about 2 to 6 drops instillation in each nostril. Usually, your ayurvedic doctor would suggest you using it in the morning (According to ayurveda KAPHA KALA).

In NASYA therapy, panchakarma therapist can use 4 to 12 drops of Shadbindu Tail in each nostril or as per your health condition and main symptoms.

Caution & Side Effects

Shadbindu Tail is an ayurvedic medicine used for nasal instillation. Therefore, Shadbindu Tail can cause nasal irritation, which can stay for 15 minutes to 2 hours. You can also have sneezing immediately after using it. It is normal and occurs in every patients taking NASYA Panchakarma Therapy.

Contraindications

In following conditions, you should not use Shadbindu oil.

  • Nasal trauma or injuries
  • Allergic reaction to any of its ingredient
  • Loss of physical strength
  • Pregnancy

    1. It may cause irritation even with 2 drops. It will be only for a few minutes and subsides by itself. 2 drops of Shadbindu oil is sufficient dosage for all general diseases. In severe cases, the dosage can be increased.

  1. Do we need to restrict some kinds of food for example meat during the period of this Shadbindu tail use?

    I am suffering from nasal polyps and in the interval of 2-3 month it, attack in this period I feel uneasiness, many time nose blocked, and in night.
    I arose because of congestion in nose, one of my friend suggest me use Shadbindu oil, regularly you may get benefit, and after sometimes polyps will be destroyed or will go in hibernation.
    Dr., May I use medicines for few days and after getting relief, can I use continuously, please suggest me.

    1. The therapy with Shadbindu oil for Nasal Polyp should be continued for 3 to 6 months or you may also consider Nasya Karma with Shadbindu oil for 2 weeks under supervision of ayurvedic physician. In this procedure, the high dosage of oil is instilled and gives good results along with other oral medicines, as doctor will recommend.

      Shadbindu oil can be continued as Rasayana and Preventive Therapy in dosage of 2 drops in each nostril everyday (once a day) in the morning and there is no specified duration for it. It can be taken even for years regularly without any issue.

  4. Does this work on the conditions of congested turbinates and/or reduction of the turbinates?

  5. I am suffering from headache above eyes. At first, it is on half or central head but now paining over eyes. Also after two days interval of tablets taken headache comes.

    Within four days flu occurs, also suffering from acidity and allergy, like as skin reddish. That all starting from two and half years at more times.

    Are this all effects of sinuses or acidity?
    Please suggest I am construction engg.

    I have bad mucus smell in my left nose & mucus is sticky. I have DNS to left. My ENT told that it’s Atrophic Rhinitis. Please tell me, is this shadbindu tail help me to get out of bad mucus smelling and Atrophic Rhinitis.

    1. Yes, Shadbindu Tail is helpful, but you can use it until you have sticky mucus with bad smell. You may also require internal medicine like Sitopaladi Churna, so consult an ayurvedic physician for a proper treatment.

  9. Is this good for hair?
    My hair is falling since last 1 year and one of my friend suggest me about shadbindu oil.
    Can you revert with your opinion?

    1. Nasya (Nasal instillation) with shadbindu oil helps to prevent hair fall. It can also be used in other problems related to scalp and hair.
