Supari Pak

Supari Pak is an ayurvedic tonic for both women and men, which acts on the reproductive system and helps in the management of both men’s and women’s health conditions. The main action of Supari Pak is observed on the excess secretions due to its astringent action, so it helps to treat leucorrhoea in women and spermatorrhea in men. In addition to this, it is also a nutritive tonic and provides strength to the uterus. Nowadays, it is famous formulation used for the maintenance of the women’s health. It is also called majun supari pak in Unani Medicine.

Supari (Betel Nuts) are cut into smaller parts and then washed in water. Leave then for drying under shade and then grind them to make a fine powder. The powder of Supari, milk and ghee are mixed together. Then heat is given to the mixture until it becomes thick. Then Sugar is added and cooked for a few minutes. Then it is removed from the heat and following ingredients are added in powdered form.

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS

Supari Pak has aphrodisiac and astringent properties. It is fertility enhancer in both males and females. It also exerts antioxidant, anxiolytic, and astringent action. In men, it reduces performance anxiety, increases the threshold of stimuli, improves time and overall performance. In women, it nourishes the uterus, reduces pelvic inflammation, and tones uterine musculature.

Supari Pak Benefits & Uses

Supari Pak is famous ayurvedic medicine used for the treatment of women’s health conditions, especially for the management of leucorrhoea. It contains several ingredients, which have antimicrobial properties. Therefore, it helps to get rid of infections of reproductive organs. In addition, it improves blood circulation to the pelvic organs and Supari Pak containing Loha Bhasma helps to increase hemoglobin level and formation of the blood. It also acts uterine muscles and improves their tone.

Leucorrhoea

Supari Pak has antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-microbial and astringent properties. It reduces infections of reproductive organs and mitigates the inflammation. It exerts a soothing effect on the mucous membranes and gives relief from irritation, which helps to reduce associated inflammation. Antibacterial and antimicrobial actions of Supari eliminate the bacterial infections. Therefore, it helps to reduce all symptoms of irritation, white discharge, foul odor and other associated symptoms.

Many women with leucorrhoea also have following symptoms:

This mixture in given dosage should be taken twice daily for 1 to 3 months depending on the severity. However, it gives awesome results within 1 to 2 weeks, but the long-term use also helps to prevent recurrence of infections and inflammation of reproductive organs. Ultimately, it provides a long lasting cure and precludes the leucorrhea.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

The most common cause of Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is bacterial infections. The antibacterial effect of Supari Pak kills the bacteria and restricts their growth. The anti-inflammatory action reduces inflammation and restores the health of pelvic organs. The antispasmodic action of Supari reduces pain occurring in the lower abdomen and pelvis, and astringent effects reduce unpleasant odor and discharge. When it is given with Ashokarishta, it also helps to regulate the menstrual periods and flow.

Recurrent Miscarriage

According to the ayurvedic point of view, recurrent miscarriage occurs when uterine musculature becomes unable to implant the fertilized egg appositely. It occurs due to the weakness of the uterus and loss of tonicity of uterine musculature. However, its main remedy is Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera), which is given with Misri (sugar) and cow’s milk. For additional supports, Supari Pak is used to tone the uterine musculature and restores its natural functions.

The general dosage of Supari Pak is as follows.

Safety Profile

The safety profile of Supari Pak is not well established under modern scientific parameters. Different brands may have variation in ingredients and their quantity according to the classical texts that they follow.

Some brands of Supari Pak may contain Naga Bhasma and Ras Sindoor, Bang Bhasma and Camphor, which may not be suitable for long-term use (i.e. more than 6 weeks). You should check ingredients and consult local Ayurveda physician for appropriate dosage according to ingredients in the Supari Pak.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Supari Pak acts on the reproductive organs, especially on the uterus. Some ingredients in Supari Pak are strictly contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation, so it should be avoided.

If you are using Supari Pak for infertility, then you should stop it 2 weeks before planning for conception/pregnancy. If you skipped this point, then you should immediately stop it after confirmation of pregnancy. Unknowingly, the short-term use of Supari Pak in pregnancy may not be worrisome, but you should immediately stop it after knowing you are pregnant.

Contraindications

  2. Hypokalemia

Supari (Betel Nut), the main ingredient of Supari Pak, increases calcium absorption in the intestine and reduces potassium level. Therefore, patients with high calcium level and low potassium level should avoid it. (Reference)

  2. If potassium level is high and using insulin injection, is it suggested to take it?

    1. 1. Supari (Betel Nut), the main ingredient of Supari Pak, increases calcium absorption in the intestine and reduces potassium level. Therefore, it can be taken if the patient has high potassium level in the blood. However, it is not recommended if the patient has low potassium level and high calcium level.

      2. Supari Pak also contains sugar content. It may affect blood sugar level. Some may also have to increase the dosage of insulin or antidiabetic drugs. In such case, start taking it in low dosage and gradually increase its dosage to stabilize the effects on blood sugar level and adjust the dosage of insulin/antidiabetic medicine accordingly.
