  1. Sir,

There is a concern that senna when used with yastimadhu (licorice) can bring down the body’s potassium levels.

    Kindly comment.

    1. When herbs are used in the natural form and within their recommended dosage, these effects are minimal. All studies indicating these effects are related to the higher dosage of Licorice i.e. 12 grams and licorice extracts (unnatural form).

  2. Thank you for your enlightening and apt reply.

Many proprietary laxatives (or purgatives) like kayam churna use senna leaves as the main ingredient. This causes habit formation and drug dependence, thereby weakening the system. Is there a method whereby you can use this ingredient and still do not cause a widespread damage. Like for example can we say that classical formulations like this one (although they contain senna) are still more safer than proprietary medicines.

Your comment can help all those millions who suffer from chronic constipation and feel themselves trapped in OTC medicaments that promise a quick relief.

    regards

  3. There is a concern that senna, widely used in purgatives and laxatives, leads to loss of tone of intestine by inducing peristalsis if used for long periods. Can some of the classical formulations not be tweaked to exclude senna from the ingredients? Senna is not good for atonic bowel. What is your view?
