Panaviraladi Bhasma

Panaviraladi Bhasma Ganji (Panaviraladi Bhasmam) is an ayurvedic medicine described in Sahasrayogam for the treatment of edema and ascites. Similar to Aviltoladi Bhasma, Panaviraladi Bhasma has diuretic action and both have some common ingredients. According to ayurveda, it is Kshara (Alkali) formulation, which induces diuresis and reduces fluid accumulation in the body.

Ingredients

Panaviraladi Bhasma is made from following ingredients. All ingredients are taken in equal proportion.

  1. Borassus Flabellifer – Panavirala
  2. Achyranthes Aspera – Prickly Chaff Flower – Apamarga
  3. Asteracantha Longifolia – Kokilaaksha
  4. Musa Paradisiaca – Banana tree – Kela (Kadali)

Panaviraladi Bhasma has following healing properties.

Therapeutic Indications

Edema or Ascites is main indication for the use of Panaviraladi Bhasma. It is also effective in liver disorders, abdominal distension and intestinal gas.

Benefits & Medicinal Uses

Diuretic property of Panaviraladi Bhasma is mainly responsible for its therapeutic benefits and uses. It induces diuresis and reduces excess accumulated fluids in the body. It also improves appetite, liver and spleen functions.

Edema

Edema is the main indication of Panaviraladi Bhasma use. Generally, edema caused by the other causes like medication, sitting or standing in one position for a long time, etc., it can work alone.

However, it may not correct the underlying cause of the disease, but it can reduce overall swelling. Edema may occur due to mainly three major causes:

  1. Heart Diseases
  2. Kidney Disease
  3. Liver Disorders

Edema due to Heart Diseases

Panaviraladi Bhasma along with Punarnava and Arjun Ksheer Paak and Abhrak Bhasma help combating heart diseases and reduce edema due to the congestive heart failure. However, remedies can be different for different individuals according to dominance of the Dosha according to ayurveda, but these three medicines are commonly given to all heart patients with edema.

Edema due to Kidney Diseases

Panaviraladi Bhasma increases urine output and reduces edema in the legs and around the eyes that occurs due to kidney diseases. This type of edema is commonly found in people with Nephrotic syndrome or kidney failure. However, Panaviraladi Bhasma may not be beneficial in end-stage kidney disease.

Edema due to Liver Disorders

Panaviraladi Bhasma improves liver functions, increases bile secretion in the intestine and improves appetite. In general, it is mainly indicated when edema occurs. Along with Punarnavadi Kashayam, Panaviraladi Bhasma is effective for reducing edema and improving liver functions.

Side Effects of Aviltoladi Bhasma

Panaviraladi Bhasma is Kshara (Alkali) based medicine. Therefore, it may cause excess loss of body fluids due to diuresis process.

The long-term use (more than 8 weeks) of Panaviraladi Bhasma can lead to calcium loss due to Kshara in nature, which may lead to low bone mineral density. People with osteoporosis should not use it.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Panaviraladi Bhasmam is Kshara medicine, so it is not suitable in pregnancy because it may cause hindrance in calcium metabolism and causes mineral loss in the pregnant women. In lactating mothers, it Kshara nature can reduce breast milk supply.

Contraindications

Panaviraladi Bhasmam has following absolute contraindications:

  1. Low bone mineral density
  2. Osteoporosis
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Lactation
