Are you upset about health, family, work, money? Are you worried and anxious right? Your heartbeat has increased. Your breathing is rapid and shallow. You are not able to relax even if you wish to, then you might be having anxiety disorder.

Feeling nervous and upset happens at some point of time. However, in severe cases of anxiety you feel helpless, confused and frustrated. Overwhelming anxiety, which is becoming a hurdle in your daily life, is something that is not normal. This kind of anxiety might also lead to depression.

Here are some natural home remedies, which can help you in treating anxiety disorders.

Remedies for Anxiety

Chamomile tea

Chamomile tea helps in anxiety disorder due to the main two phytochemicals. LUTEOLIN and APIGENIN in chamomile tea are two important ingredients that promote relaxation.

According to the study conducted by the Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania, patients having anxiety disorders were given supplements of chamomile for eight weeks and it showed great results when compared to others.

How to use

  • Add 2 or 3 tsp. of dried chamomile in a pan containing a cup of hot water.
  • Boil it for few minutes and strain the solution.
  • Add little honey for added flavor.
  • You can have around three cups of chamomile tea whenever you feel anxious.

Green Tea

Green tea has shown great benefits in treating anxiety. It is due to the presence of L-THEANINE in it. It helps in controlling rapid increase of heartbeat and blood pressure. Few studies have also indicated that green tea when consumed daily can reduce anxiety. You can drink many cups of green tea to get L-THEANINE from it.

How to use

  • Add dried green tea leaves of around 2 or 3 tbsp. to a cup of boiling water.
  • Allow it to boil for few minutes and then strain it.
  • Add little lemon juice and honey for improving the taste of the bitter green tea.

Oranges

The citric fragrance of an orange can instantly calm your nervous and help uplift your mood. The fragrance of an orange peel itself can help fight against depression.

How to use

  • Simply peel an orange and enjoy its fragrance.
  • You can also add few orange peels in a pan containing hot water and inhale its vapors.

You will instantly feel rejuvenated. Try having a glass of orange juice every day to see visible results.

Hops

A bitter herb, hops shows effective results in controlling anxiety disorders. Volatile oil like substance is the sedative chemical in hops and is available in the form of tinctures and extracts.

This herb can be taken in the form of tea but it bitter taste and hence you need to use chamomile herb as well. Along with valerian herb, you can use this sedative to promote sleep.

How to use

  • Add 2 or 3 tsp. of dried hops and chamomile in a pan filled with a glass of hot water.
  • Boil it for few minutes and strain the decoction.
  • Add little honey for additional taste and consume it regularly.

Caution

However, you need to pre-seek an advice from your doctor if you are taking a prescribed sedative or any other supplements.

Lavender

A study have found that people having anxiety disorders who had a massage with lavender oil felt relieved rather than those who had a normal oil massage.

Another study also proved that lavender oil could lower systolic blood pressure, which is associated with stress.

How to use

  • You can put few drops of lavender oil on your pillow or in the bathtub water.
  • You can also add few drops of lavender oil in boiling water and inhale its vapors to calm you.

Epsom salts

Hot bath is soothing and can increase your body temperature, which helps enhance mood and reduce anxiety. For additional benefits, add a cup of Epsom salt to it.

How to use

  • Add a cup of Epsom salt to the warm water you bathe.
  • Magnesium sulfate in Epsom salts can lower blood pressure and calm down your stress and anxiety.

Passionflower

Passionflower is a sedative herb, which helps in treating sleep disorders and anxiety. It helps cure nausea and the “feeling of butterfly eruption in stomach”.

It might cause drowsiness. Hence, you should not consume it along with lemon balm, hops, valerian and other such sedative herbs without the approval of your physician. You should also not take this herb for longer than a month at a time.

How to use

The supplements of this herb are available and can be taken orally after seeking approval from your doctor.

Caution

If you are pregnant, this herb is not for you. It has some phyto-chemicals, which can cause contractions of uterus. Therefore, avoid using passionflower in pregnancy related anxiety.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg is another wonderful spice, which acts as a muscle relaxant and helps combat depression and anxiety disorders. It also helps in promoting sleep.

How to use

  • Inhale the fragrance of nutmeg oil to cool down your brain.
  • You can even add 1/4th tbsp. of nutmeg powder in your food daily to see great results.

Caution

Do not exceed the intake of nutmeg powder as it might show some side effects for people having psychiatric problems. In pregnancy, you should not use nutmeg because it can induce contractions and promote bleeding.

Lemon Balm

This herb has been in use for treating anxiety disorders. This herb is used to calm digestive tract and nervous system. It also helps reduce blood pressure. The extracts of this herb have ingredients, which create a calming effect on mind and are effective in treating anxiety.

However, few studies stated that the calming effect of this herb shows great results when taken along with other anti-anxiety herbs.

How to use

  • Add 1tbsp. of dried lemon balm to a pan containing a cup of boiling water and prepare its herbal decoction.
  • Make sure that aroma of this decoction does not escape into the air.
  • Drink it before going to sleep and follow it daily for not more than a period of two weeks at a time.

You can either take supplements of this herb after consulting your GP.
