Prapaundarikadi Thailam (Oil)

Prapaundarikadi Thailam (Tail) is ayurvedic medicated oil used for hair fall and hair loss (alopecia). It is also beneficial for all types of headache and migraine. Both Head Massage and nasal instillation with Prapaundarikadi Thailam are necessary to treat hair loss and migraine pain. Alone head massage works well in preventing hair fall, strengthening hairs and nourishing hair roots.

Medicinal Properties

The head massage with Prapaundarikadi Thailam (Oil) exerts anti-stress action and soothing effect. It strengthens hair and nourishes the scalp. It is demulcent and conditioner effect, so it makes hairs softer and healthy.

Nasal administration (Nasya or Nasal instillation) has wide range of therapeutic effects including:

  1. Anodyne (appears in headache, and neck pain)
  2. Anti-migraine (reducing pulsating pain and other migraine symptoms)
  3. Hair growth stimulator and promoter
  4. Hair tonic

Ayurvedic Properties

Prapaundarikadi Thailam mainly pacifies PITTA Dosha and then it is effective against VATA dosha. Therefore, it is suitable for patients with PITTA body type or patients having Pitta dominance symptoms like:

  1. Hair fall
  2. Early greying of hairs (amla in it prevent premature graying of hair)
  3. Change in hair pigmentation (from black to grey, white or light brown)
  4. Pulsating headache
  5. Headache with burning sensation
  6. Recurrent complaints of heartburn and hyperacidity

Therapeutic Indications

As discussed above, Prapaundarikadi Thailam is effective in following diseases:

  • Alopecia or hair loss
  • Hair fall
  • Premature graying of hair
  • Headache
  • Migraine
  • Stress and depression with irritability and aggressive behavior

Directions to Use

Prapaundarikadi Thailam should be applied over the scalp and gentle massage with finger tips should be done for 15 to 25 minutes. It should also be used as your regular hair oil.

For Nasya (Nasal Instillation), initially 2 drops of Prapaundarikadi Thailam should be instilled into each nostril and then the dosage can be increased up to 10 drops in each nostril.

Safety Profile

The head massage with Prapaundarikadi Thailam is safe and has no side effects.

Nasal administration can cause following side effects:

  1. Nasal irritation
  2. Itching in throat
  3. Oil taste in throat or mouth
  4. Sneezing

However, the side effects are considered normal and these occurs in all types of Nasya oils.
