Edema or Ascites

Edema occurs due to excess fluid trapped in the body tissues. It occurs most common in the ankles, feet and legs. It may also occur in the hands or any other parts of the body. The most common causes of edema are:

  1. Medication
  2. Heart Diseases
  3. Kidney Disease
  4. Liver Disorders

The general treatment includes the use of Aviltoladi Bhasmam in all types of edema with any underlying cause. However, patient also requires medication according to the underlying diseases.

General Edema

Aviltoladi Bhasma alone can help in edema if it occurs due to sitting or standing in one position for a longer period. It can also help alone if edema occurs due to excess use of steroid drugs, estrogens, NSAIDs, etc.

Edema due to Heart Diseases

Generally, congestive heart failure is a main cause of edema in heart patients. In such case, heart’s lower chambers cannot effectively pump the blood. As a result, edema occurs in ankles, feet and legs. In mild cases, Aviltoladi Bhasma is given with thin buttermilk. In addition to this treatment, following medicines are also required.

RemediesDosage (Twice Daily)
Arjuna Kshir PakPrepared with 100 ml milk, 100 ml water and 5 grams Terminalia Arjuna Bark Powder – simmered to reduce to 100 ml
Aviltoladi Bhasma500 mg with thin buttermilk
Laxmi Vilas Ras (Nardiya) or Mahalaxmi Vilas Ras (Gold)125 mg
Prabhakar Vati500 mg

In some cases, other remedies may also require like Abhrak Bhasma, Mukta Bhasma, Manikya Bhasma, Akik Pishti, Swarna Bhasma, etc.

Edema due to Kidney Diseases

The edema due to kidney diseases occurs in legs and around the eyes. The main cause of this type of edema is Nephrotic syndrome (due to loss of albumin in urine and decrease in albumin in the blood, which lead to fluid accumulation) and kidney failure (due to problem with excretion). In both cases, Aviltoladi Bhasma is natural substitute for water pills. However, it cannot alone treat the disease, so patient also requires other ayurvedic remedies according to his Dosha involvement.

Edema due to Liver Disorders

Liver cirrhosis or liver damage is a main cause of edema occurs in abdominal cavity. Aviltoladi Bhasma along with liver protective medicines (like Silymarin – milk thistle plant extract, Bhringraj powder, Punarnava Churna, Kutki, etc.) helps reducing fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. Arogyavardhini vati is helpful in such case, but it may take a longer time to show results. Therefore, Arogyavardhini vati in combination with Aviltoladi Bhasmam has better results in edema due to liver diseases.
